The Safe Access Zone (SAZ) bill
The Safe Access Zone (SAZ) bill has passed the final stage in the Scottish Parliament on 12/06/2024. The SAZ bill was passed into law with an overwhelming majority of MSPs supporting the bill ( Yes – 118, No – 1, Abstain – 0). Safe access zones will be established within 200 meters of abortion clinics to keep staff and patients free from harassment as they seek access to vital health services.
The Safe Access Zone (SAZ) bill introduced by Gillian Mackay MSP in October 2023 has now passed stage 2 of the Scottish Parliament process. The bill aims to establish ‘buffer’ zones around premises delivering abortion services in Scotland to prevent the presence of anti-choice protesters.
On the 28th of May 2024, the bill passed stage 2 of the Scottish Parliament procedures. 123 MSPs voted in favour of the bill, and 1 against.

Despite attempts by certain Tory MSPs to water down the bill, the amendments in question were withdrawn after discussions in the Scottish Parliament.
The next stage (3) will take place on the 12th of June 2024.
